SOME special horses are being auctioned at Tattersalls, but they will never win a race.

The Newmarket bloodstock sales are accepting bids for 13 lifesize horse models painted by local artists, including Kirsty Sharman, from Bury St Edmunds, and Stuart Roy, from Mildenhall, with 80 per cent of the sale price split between St Nicholas Hospice Care and Racing Welfare with 20 per cent to the artist. The deadline for bids is October 14.

The horses were produced for the town council’s Horse About Newmarket project. The artists worked in Newmarket’s Guineas shopping centre and the horses have been shown about town.

The artists had to use names of winners of Newmarket’s top race, The Guineas.

Kirsty chose Shadeed and said: “Shadeed means strength so I wanted symbols of strength to appear on the horse.”

Designer and artist Stuart chose Sea the Stars and said: “I was inspired by the wide starry skies I have seen since coming to East Anglia and wanted to capture the contrast between the land and the deep darkness of space.”
