St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury
The magnificent St Edmundsbury Cathedral - mother church of the Anglican Diocese of St Edmunsbury and Ipswich - has been the site of worship and pilgrimage for more than 1,000 years.
Now topped with a tower which can be seen for miles around, the cathedral stands at the edge of Bury's colourful Abbey Gardens and both provide an oasis of calm.
The death of Edmund, King of East Angles, at the hands of the Danes in 869 led to the building of an abbey to house his remains.
St James's Church was built within the precincts of the Abbey, becoming the cathedral in 1914.
History seeps from every corner.
This is the place of baptism of the childrne of Bartholemew Gosnold who founded Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English-speaking settlement in America.
Guided tours of this spectacular building start on March 28, 2008 and run until the end of September, daily (not Sundays) at 11.30am.
Children can enjoy the cathedral's discovery centre and learn about its past and, at the Cloister Art Gallery, visitors can discover work by local artists.
For a relaxing start or end to your visit, try the Cathedral Refectory, offering hot and cold food and drinks throughout the day (9.30am to 4.30pm).
The cathedral shop has some inspiring gifts (open Mon-Sat 10am to 5pm).
Details are available at www.stedscathedral.co.uk, telephone 01284 754933.
