Restaurant review - The One Bull, Bury St Edmunds
The One Bull on Angel Hill
I’m not sure about you, but when I make the effort to go out for a meal, I want excellent service, great food and a sense that other people are enjoying themselves at the place I’ve chosen, writes Barry Peters.
The gem that is The One Bull on Angel Hill, in Bury St Edmunds, offers all of those and more.
We were greeted with a smile and seated quickly - our drinks plus a complimentary bottle of house fizzy or still water were offered to us. A nice touch: I hate feeling awkward asking for a jug of tap water.
The One Bull attracts diners of all ages - there were a couple of 40th birthday parties eating alongside families, while the bar (selling great wines and home-brewed beer - see panel) was oozing with people. It provided just the right atmosphere.
We started with a ‘special’ (salmon and caper fishcake – which was so succulent) and I had blackened mackerel with a warm salad (£6). It sent my tastebuds tingling.
I declined my favourite appetiser at the One Bull (my fund-raising regime had kicked in). But try the warm pork crackling with apple sauce (£2.50) if you get a chance - it’s divine.
Mains were fillet of wild halibut (£17) and chicken with steamed greens (£12). Both were cooked to perfection.
We indulged with the cheese board (£6 - in the interests of research) and were not disappointed.
I’ve been to the One Bull twice – each time has been a really positive experience and I’ve eaten fabulous food.
I wouldn’t say it with every place I eat – but I’d recommend it to anyone.
what to expect The food - A short but interesting dinner menu with something for everyone. Children are catered for with their own menu.
Service/atmosphere - Staff are engaging and knowledgeable. A cosy sofa snug adjoins the eating area and gives a feeling of warmth. The One Bull is Grade II listed and its core dates back to the 16th century.
