Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds

Nowton Park on the edge of Bury St Edmunds offers visitors nearly 200 acres in which to amble, discover nature or simply sit and enjoy the fresh air.

Lanscaped over 100 years ago in typical Victorian style, Nowton Park was part of the Oakes family estate until 1985 and is now owned by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.

Walks vary in length and time, anything up to an hour on the perimeter path and takes in such delights as the lime tree avenue which was planted in 1880.

Beneath these trees in the spring, visitors will find a carpet of more than 100,000 daffodils.

The Ranger Centre is open at weekends and during school holidays and sells gifts and refreshments and provides information about the park.

As well as the natural attractions at Nowton Park, there is also a children's play area, football pitches, an all weather sports pitch, parking and toilets.

The wildflower meadow, sown in 1990 with a mix of flowers, has boosted the number of butterflies to the park and 2,500 hornbeam trees make up over two miles of hedging at the popular maze.

Opening times: Nowton Park is open all year round from 8.30am to dusk (10pm latest in the summer).

Getting there: The park is in Nowton Road, Bury St Edmunds.
