Moyse's Hall Museum, Bury St Edmunds

Moyse's Hall Museum, in Bury St Edmunds, has kept watch over the Cornhill since 1180.

The building itself offers a fascinating look at the past and is crammed with all sorts of artefacts and memorabilia from prehistoric times to the present day.

Awarded the East of England Tourist Board's Small Attraction of the Year title in 2005, Moyse's Hall is a gem of a place right in the heart of historic Bury St Edmunds.

Discover the story of St Edmund, from whom the town gets its name, the history of the abbey and life in the town throughout the years.

Learn about time with some excellent examples of time pieces and wander into the Suffolk Regiment Gallery, which recounts a soldier's life through the ages.

If your taste is for the sinister and criminal, then Moyse's Hall has that, too.

Uncover the tale of William Corder, hanged in Bury in 1828 for the murder of Maria Marten at Polstead a year earlier and look at a book of the trial bound in his skin, as well as a piece of his scalp.

Children are well catered for with their own activity space and quizzes.

Opening tmies: Moyse's Hall Museum is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm. Guided tours of the collection start at 2pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and guided tours of the textile collection are given at 2pm on the first Sunday of the month.

Admission: Free to residents of St Edmundsbury, other visitors pay 2.60 (adults) and 2.10 (concessions and children).
