Melford Hall
With its impressive chimneys and octagonal turrets, it's not hard to imagine Melford Hall once lavishly entertained Queen Elizabeth I and 2,000 members of her court.
It was Sir William Cordell, noted as one of the most hospitable gentleman in the county, who welcomed the Queen in 1578 - a noteable event in a long and colourful history of this mellow red brick house - classed as one of the finest Elizabethan houses in the East of England.
The hall incorporates part of a medieval building held by the Abbots of Bury St Edmunds, who used it as a place of relaxation for 500 years until 1539.
Since 1786, Melford Hall has been home to the Hyde Parkers, one of Britain's most distinguished naval families and is currently home to the 12th baronet - Sir Richard Hyde Parker and his wife, Jeannie.
During the Second World War, Melford Hall was requisitioned by the Army and, in 1942, fire gutted part of the central wing, leading to major restoration works.
The hall is home to an impressive collection of art work and one room is dedicated to children's author and artist Beatrix Potter, who was cousin to the current owner's grandmother and who was a frequent visitor to the hall.
Visitors can see the original Jemima Puddleduck model, as well as a collection of sketches and artwork.
Melford Hall and its 130 acres of parkland were transferred to the National Trust in 1960 and offer a variety of activities throughout the year, including children's days.
Opening times: Melford Hall is open Wednesday to Sunday, 1.30 to 5pm.
Admission: 5.80 for adults, 2.90 for children and 14.50 for families.
How to get there: Melford Hall is signposted off the A134 Melford bypass, between Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds.
