Library to get new technology

Computers offering word processing and wireless internet access will arrive at Mildenhall library following a £5,000 grant.

Funding for the project was given to the library from Mildenhall Parish Council.

Denise Gray, manager of Mildenhall Library, said: “There’s no where at the moment where you can complete your CV, not for free.

“To be able to come in and apply for a job online and be able to send that application straight away. I think that will make a huge difference.”

The new equipment is expected to arrive at the library in about eight weeks.

Mildenhall Parish Councillor, David Bowman, said: “I felt there was a lot we could do to offer help and support.

“Lots of people have the modern technology but there’s still a considerable number of people that do not and this opens it up to them six days a week, and for free.”

Cllr Bowman said the computers would encourage people to use the library’s other services making it more viable.

Suffolk Libraries Industrial and Provident Society (IPS) took over the day-to-day running of the county’s libraries on August 1 last year.

Since then libraries across the county have seen funding cuts and the formation of groups working to keep them open.

The Friends of Mildenhall Library need to raise about £3,000 by April 2014 to compensate for a shortfall in Suffolk County Council funding.

Denise said: “We still have a short fall the grant that’s received is not enough so we can’t sit back.

“I think what we need is just community support.”

At a meeting on Tuesday the group discussed fund-raising ideas including offering IT lessons, holding cake sales and running a sponsored walk.

Friends of Mildenhall Library chairman, Tom Caple, said he was ‘very pleased’ with the groups progress and a programme of events would be drawn up.

These will include a celebration of World Book Night at the library on April 23.
