Kerry’s homecoming gig will benefit arts centre

WEST End and Broadway star Kerry Ellis is playing a homecoming performance at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, to raise money for a new arts centre in Stowmarket
The international singing star is back in Suffolk to play the gig on March 18.
Kerry, who was born and raised in Haughley, shot to West End fame as understudy to Martine McCutcheon in My Fair Lady.
Due to illness, Kerry got the chance to hit the stage, playing the title character five times in total. After this her career boomed when she was spotted by Brian May and asked to audition for his jukebox opera We will Rock you.
In 2002 she was cast as Meat, playing the role until April 2004.
In 2006, she joined the original London cast of the musical Wicked to play Elphaba, continuing the role until June 2008.
She then transferred to the Broadway production at the Gershwin Theatre.
Her portrayal of Elphaba garnered her not only two awards, but critical acclaim and worldwide praise
Kerry said she was excited and nervous about returning to her home county to perform.
She said: “It is going to be kind of strange coming back and performing in Suffolk.
“I toured last year with with a big theatrical tour with Brian May and his band.
“This year, the reason I am performing it is to raise money for the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket.
“It is the perfect chance to do a concert at home.
“I haven’t been close enough to Suffolk to do a show here – the last time I visited was two years ago.
“To be honest I will be quite nervous compared to how I am on stage usually.
“I will be up there performing in front of lots of my old friends and school mates and family – people I have known forever.
“I am really looking forward to it, it will be really great to come home and to have the support and show people what I have been up to.
“It is not going to be a huge show like I normally do – it will be quite an inimate evening.
“It will be a performance with an audience who really want to see me so I am really looking forward to it.
“I do work for other charities but what is really nice is when I get to do something that is close to home and means something to the area where I was brought up.
“I know where the centre is and it is something great for the area. It is great that it has been transformed into something postitive and creative.
“I grew up in a little village near Stowmarket so this gig and the cause it is raising money for fits perfectly for me.”
