IT was a day when the chickens were definitely the stars when Harvey’s Garden Plants staged its annual chicken day.

The Thurston business, which grows mainly woodland and shaded plants like hellebores and snowdrops, has also become a popular spot for enjoying refreshments at the Garden Room and watching the chickens.

On Saturday, Colchester Poultry Club displayed a range of fowl and some chicks, greatly enjoyed by young visitors.

There were informative talks on keeping poultry and owner Roger Harvey said the day was very well attended.

“It was better than expected as it was dry and nice and we had a lot of chickens on show and they proved highly entertaining.”

Roger has his own flock of birds and keeps around 26 layers for eggs for the Garden Room and he says they are very much part of the family.

The nursery is also planning to plant up its young woodland of native trees with some of the woodland plants it has been growing.
