FROM charming courtyard gardens to rolling lawns and carefully created traditional beds, Lavenham’s Hidden Gardens inspired their visitors.

While numbers were down on last year, due to the unsettled weather, hundreds of people strolled through the 17 gardens on show on Sunday and discovered a host of hidden gems which were lush and green thanks to the recent rainfall.

Organiser Mike Hodges said: “We have a big diversity of gardens on show. Some of them are manicured to within an inch of their lives, while others are left to be more natural looking.

Among the gardens opened was that of Lavenham Hall which was dotted with the lifesize animal and human works of sculptor Kate Faulkner with visitors invited to picnic in the park to music in the evening.

The new Ropers Court development also showcased what could be done with smaller and newer gardens while Orange Cottage, in Prentice Street, showed a fascinating series of small terraced gardens plus a Jubilee themed potting shed and magnificent summer house.

Money raised, which is usually around £3,000, will go to Lavenham Community Council for use in the village.
