Heritage’s finest open their doors

PEOPLE will be getting a chance to have a first-hand peep behind the facades of some of our most fascinating buildings.
Many that would normally be shut to the public are open over four days from September 6-9 during the Heritage Open Days event. Visitors are welcome to look and catch a rare glimpse inside many of West Suffolk’s oldest buildings.
Once again people can visit the Norman Tower and enjoy the chance to see bell ringing as well as enjoying a panoramic video from the top of the tower and photos.
This year, people can also enjoy a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of Bury Fire Station. Firefighters will be on duty showing people around their station and some of their equipment although the tour may be cut short if the crew has a call out,
Bury Police are opening their station and allowing the public to experience something different, including the chance to sit in the back of a police van, meet a police dog and have their fingerprints taken.
The Deanery in the Great Churchyard opens, as does the Suffolk Regiment Museum in The Keep, in Out Risbygate.
There is also a lecture on the Royal Observor Corps which had its ops room in The Guildhall, while Fullers Mill garden on the banks of the River Lark and Lucy Redman’s garden will both be open.
There are church trails in Bury and Mildenhall and Pakenham and Bardwell Windmills will be welcoming visitors. A leaflet about the heritage days is available from the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) on Angel Hill in Bury. Entrance is free but bookings through the TIC are needed for some tours and talks.
