FESTIVAL 2010: Good times with publican Al

Al Murray - Pub Landlord, Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds, Saturday.

'GOOD evening, it's Saturday night - that means you can stop ploughing,' said Al Murray as he strode on to stage to a cheering crowd.

Wearing his burgundy blazer and carrying an obligatory pint of lager, the comic then set about quizzing members of the audience.

Sitting in an upper circle box I was well out of the firing line, but 'student' Andrew, in the front row of the pit, was not.

Poor Andrew, whose A-level subject choice was met with much derision, was asked what he did for a living. It was eventually deduced that he does nothing for a living and is, in fact, just a schoolboy.

Then Simon ('beautiful British name') and Jane were quizzed, with Al drawing some rather suspect assumptions about their 'parties'.

Off-duty copper and doughnut lover Mike was then ridiculed, before Al made a move on his wife when Mike went to the toilet.

The comic's simple questions and the often hilarious answers WERE the show. So thank you to Andrew, Simon, Jane, Mike, the illustrator engaged to the RE teacher, hyena laugh woman and the retired doctor. You made it a night to remember.
