Drumming event will draw crowd
SAUCEPANS, frying pans and wheelie bins will become instruments of creativity as a major drumming event comes to Stowmarket as part of the town’s music festival this year.
Percussion tutor George Fothergill is inviting the community to help him create piece of percussion music and enjoy some junk funk at the Stowmarket Festival being staged on June 7 and 8.
George will be running workshops at Stowmarket Recreation Ground on Thursday June 7 between 10am and noon.
Junk funk involves creating rhythms using old household take along an item to play and they can join George in the afternoon in accompanying the Stowmarket Parkour Jam when parkour enthusiasts and free runners will showcase their acrobatic skills at a number of public locations around the town.
On the Friday, George will hold ‘drumming on your doorstep’ workshops at Chilton Fields 10.15-11.15am, Cedars Park, 12.15-1.15pm and between 2pm and 3pm at Pikes meadow play area off Needham Road. This will create a percussion piece to kick off StowFest the following day.
Festival co-ordinator Daniel Harvey said: “George is a great percussionist, an excellent tutor and is brilliant at getting everyone playing together.
“Anyone can take part in this – you don’t have to be a musical genius and it’s so enjoyable and creative.”
Stowmarket Community Centre is holding a free event for people over the age of 60 with Suffolk comedian Stephen Bayfield on Friday June 1.
This is an afternoon of comedy, music and refreshments
People can book their place by contacting Heather Tooke at the community centre in Hillside.
