David Croft dies aged 89

The MAN who made the nation laugh with his iconic classic TV comedies such as Dad’s Army, Hi-De-Hi! and ‘Allo ‘Allo has died aged 89 at his holiday home in Portugal.
David Croft, who lived in Honington, near Bury St Edmunds for most of his life, co-wrote and co-produced some of Britain’s best loved TV comedies.
A message from his family posted on his website read: “The family of comedy legend David Croft OBE are sad to report that David died peacefully in his sleep at his house in Portugal earlier today.
“He was a truly great man, who will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing and loving him.
“We know that he would of been proud that you had all been watching.”
As well as the hugely successful Dad’s Army, David Croft, with long-term writing partner Jimmy Perry, also created comedy classics It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Hi-de-Hi! and You Rang M’Lord.
Croft later wrote the hugely popular Are You Being Served? and ‘Allo ‘Allo with Jeremy Lloyd.
One oif his last public appearances was at the Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford to see the unveiling of the statue of Captain Mainwaring of Dad’s Army.
