Colchester Zoo

Colchester Zoo is renowned for its breeding programmes and offers a full and varied day out for visitors of any age.

The 60-acre zoo is home to 260 species and 545 sub-species and is in the process of developing a new nature trail, as well as new enclosures for some of its animals.

The zoo opened in 1963 and has built up its reputation for conservation work through projects including the European endangered species breeding programme.

Animals of all shapes and sizes call Colchester Zoo home from the huge African elephants to the tiny, industrious leaf-cutter ants which are always on the go.

Enjoy meeting some new friends at the Familiar Friends enclosure or watch birds of prey.

Take time out to enjoy some refreshments before marvelling at the acrobatics of the penguins, the majesty of the tigers or the playfulness of the chimps.

There's an animal for everyone at Colchester Zoo and, with its popular adoption programme, you can adopt your favourite knowing you are helping the species.

Opening times: Colchester Zoo is open every day except Christmas Day from 9.30am.

Admission: 14.99 for adults, 7.99 for children, 9.99 for pensioners and under threes get in free.

Getting there: The zoo is in Maldon Road, Stanway, to the south of Colchester. Follow the brown elephant signs from all directions.
