Celebration of Britten to stun at Bury festival
Matthew Barley
A unique centenary celebration of the music of Benjamin Britten will be one of the highlights of this year’s Bury St Edmunds Festival.
Matthew Barley will perform his celebration of 100 years of Benjamin Britten at the Bury St Edmunds Festival on May 17.
The Apex is one of more than 100 venues that will feature in this centenary tour, which will also see Matthew host workshops and special events.
He said: “This tour combines many of the things I love in music: core repertoire, commissions, multi-media work, education, looking for new ways and places to present great music and, of course, the extraordinary suites of Benjamin Britten.”
During the show the world renowned cellist will be accompanied by specially commissioned oil on glass visuals inspired by the music he plays.
Britten’s powerful third cello suite will be at the centre of the performance which will also include works by J.S Bach, and Tavener.
Other highlights of this year’s four day festival, held from May 16 to 19 will be themed walks, including a ghost walk, a film series at Abbeygate Picture House, Havana’s Sierra Maestra and an open air performance by Michael Jackson tribute act Navi in the Abbey Gardens.
