Cathedral launches organ Festival
St Edmundsbury Cathedral’s annual Organ Festival will be launched on Saturday.
The first celebrity organ recital of the series will be played by James Davy, director of music at Chelmsford Cathedral.
Works by Bach, Leighton and Vierne will be included in the recital, which will begin at 5pm and be free of charge.
“Even though it is now into its third year, the Harrison and Harrison organ continues to thrill and delight audiences and players alike,” said James Thomas, director of music at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, in Bury St Edmunds.
The organ was completely refurbished in 2010 and was further enhanced by the installation of two new painted and gilded cases which have transformed the interior of the Cathedral.
The Organ Festival will continue throughout 2013 with recitals by Katherine Dienes-Williams, Mervyn Cousins and Ashley Grote, as well as the Cathedral’s own musicians, Dan Soper and James Thomas.

All recitals will start at 5pm and will be free, with a retiring collection.
The only exception is the recital on November 9, when tickets will be priced £10.
This final recital of the year, for which tickets will be available from September, will be by world-renowned organist Thomas Trotter.
