Band spotlight: Used to be Blonde

They may still be at high school, but Used to Be Blonde have big plans for the future.

The band, who describe their sound as 'complicated indie', just missed out on the winner's title in the final of BurySOUND last month.

But according to Alfie Allen, bassist for the band, the gig was one of the best they have had so far, and they are now hoping it could be a launch pad for future success.

With influences ranging from Bloc Party and Foals to earlier 80s punk rock bands, the five-piece first formed three years ago, although they have only been playing with their current singer, Abby Elliot, for the last 18 months.

Initially made up two sets of brothers - Alfie and guitarist Charlie Allen, with Joe and Luke Surl on guitar and drums - and another singer who left the band, the Debenham High School students first met Abby during a gig in April last year, and it wasn't long before she became a permanent fixture in the band.

And Alfie said the band was now getting ready to record more of their songs - although he admitted to being something of a perfectionist when recording.

"We probably have a dozen or so songs to record," he said.

"We have recorded quite a lot but we have quite high standards, and at the moment there are only about two tracks of the ones we've recorded that I'm happy with.

"We also want to do some more gigs. BurySOUND was pretty good, and we're hopefully planning another gig in Debenham soon, and we played StowFest this year.

"I would say my favourite gig so far has been an event where we hired out a community centre - that or BurySOUND. The atmosphere or performing is great, although from an artistic point of view, I really enjoy writing songs together.

"We just want to spread the word and get noticed. We definitely want to make it big."
