Band spotlight: Umbrella Assassins

Alternative rock band Umbrella Assassins are hoping to make an impression with the launch of their first single.

The Haverhill-based band may have been together since 2006 and put together a clutch of demos in that time, but December sees them release their first record on their own label, Pint'A'Bread Records.

And the group, made up of singer and guitarist Steve Church, bassist Garry McKervil, drummer Luke Andrews and Andrew Plumb, on lead guitar, are planning to release the 7in vinyl with a special launch party at the Rose Tavern, in Haverhill, on December 4.

"We started playing together about three years ago, just messing about, but now we have found our direction I suppose and we're working hard at our songs," said Steve.

"We know a band that set up their own label and we thought 'we could do that' - and then we thought if we were setting up a label we'd better release a record.

"We're breaking the mould a bit by bringing out a vinyl release. We have done CD demos before, but they can be quite throw-away, and we definitely didn't want to do a download.

"We just wanted something people could look after, and it also just marks what we have done so far."

Altough the four are influenced by bands such as The Wedding Present, Mudhoney, Black Sabbath and Nirvana, Steve said the group's own sound is more distinct, best summed up as alternative rock and garage-punk.

The single, which features tracks I Don't Know About That and Psyclone Cities, was recorded at the Old School Studios, in Bury St Edmunds.

As well as the launch party on December 4, the band have a handful of upcoming gigs including one at P J McGinty's, in Ipswich, on December 19.

Fans will also be able to buy the single at The Record Peddler, in Haverhill, and at Soundsplus, in Bury.
