Band Spotlight: The Setbacks
After a bad start, a Bury St Edmunds band are determined to come back with a bang.
The Setbacks formed a year a go after they attempted to cure classroom boredom by becoming a band.
Many of the members learned how to play their instruments from scratch and soon they were performing at BurySound in 2007.
But what they hoped would be a fairytale quickly turned into the nightmare before Christmas as panic set in when their equipment went wrong and they were asked to leave after vocalist Kurt Falconer, 16, from Walsham-le-Willows, stage-dived into the audience.
Rhythm guitarist Callum Grant, 16, from Norton, said: "Most bands around here have had previous experience but we started from scratch with no knowledge of gigging. We hoped the gig was going to be a Cinderella story, but it wasn't.
"Of all the days we didn't want it to happen, it had to be on this day. It's been a bit of an uphill struggle since."
The Setbacks have now got a new drummer, Matt Wragg, 16, from Rougham, and have changed their style to what they describe as more energetic 'petal' – punk metal.
They practise at The Rehearsal Rooms, in Bury, and with a little bit of financial help would love to start recording a six-track EP some time in the near future.
Other band members include lead guitarist Jamie Donaldson, 16, from RAF Honington, and bassist Megan Jefferson, 15, from Thurston.
All members of The Setbacks go to Thurston Community College and are preparing to take their GCSEs so, once they have finished for the summer, they hope to play as much as possible.
They also hope to stay together for the next few years to perfect their music.
