Band Spotlight: The Effects of Alcohol
A Cheltenham-based band may be coming to perform in the region now one of the members has moved to Stowmarket.
The Effects of Alcohol is no longer just something people suffer from a heavy night out or the morning after – it is also a hard-hitting rock band.
Well-known around their main base in Gloucestershire, this band may be spreading their wings in West Suffolk due to lead guitarist Gareth Hamer.
Gareth, 32, a civil engineer, followed his career to Stowmarket and now leads a double life split between the two towns.
Because he hopes to be in the region for at least another two years, he has urged his fellow band members to join him for a gig or two in the East.
The Effects of Alcohol describe themselves as an unsigned, lively and energetic five-piece rock band made up of a diverse group of individuals.
Their varied musical tastes, backgrounds and influences combine to make their tracks an exciting and original sound.
Gareth said: "I think the band demonstrates our strength as songwriters, with nine rocking songs that will get anyone's foot tapping. We have three new songs on the way, which we are looking forward to introducing to our set. To get others to appreciate your music brings a smile to your face. We seems to play a style of music that appeals to a wide audience – a style with a bit of old school rock for the AC/DC lovers, a bit of Oasis indie style, with an edge of super cool Stereophonics."
Stephen Morris, a music reviewer from BBC Gloucestershire, said: "They exist with the sole intention of rocking your world with the best riffs, snarls and drum beats that rock can buy.
"The sum total of The Effects of Alcohol can be represented in anger, resentment and a passionate desire to break a seemingly inevitable cycle."
The other band members are rhythm guitarist Neil Squires, 25, vocalist Andy Walsh, 20, bassist and backing vocalist Hamish Rowe, 26, and drummer Rob Workman, 26.
The band are currently taking time out to work on new material, with the aim of playing them at their next gig on December 19, at The Anchor, in Tewkesbury.
