Band Spotlight: Tamed

Members of a heavy metal band are to come out of retirement for a charity show – but with a much more mellow sound.

Next month will see the debut performance of Tamed, which features three members of ex-Metallica tribute band Sad But True, when they take to the stage at the newly-refurbished Pykkerell Inn, in Ixworth.

Drummer Martyn Bonnett, singer and guitarist Jason Smith and guitarist Rick Needham hung up their instruments two years ago after 11 years playing together, but the three have been persuaded to reform with bassist Matt Cooper for the gig on November 21.

And the Bury St Edmunds-based band, who will be raising money for Cancer Research UK, are looking forward to performing in front of a live audience again.

"We wanted to do something with more of an electro-acoustic twist and hopefully get people singing along," said Martyn.

"This will be our first gig and we think it's going to be good.

"We probably will do one Metallica song but they are hard to reproduce acoustically, so we'll mostly be doing chart stuff and some old prog rock like Pink Floyd – there will be something for all ages."

The fund-raiser will also have personal meaning for the band, who were asked to perform by Martyn's wife Sara, whose father died from prostate cancer five years ago.

"There's a lot of people who have been touched by cancer, so we're hoping to raise as much as we can," he said.

"It will probably be a bit nerve-wracking for us to start with but as long as we get some audience participation it should be good.

"We're looking forward to it. Once you get on stage it's like a home from home."

Tickets for the gig, which will start at 7.30pm on November 21, are available for 6 in advance or 8 on the door at the Pykkerell, in Ixworth. Advance tickets can be bought by calling 07855 878782.
