Band spotlight: Hookers' Green
Funk metal band Hookers' Green are on the hunt for more gigs and a bigger audience, after narrowly missing out on the winners' prize in a battle of the bands contest.
Guitarist Ben Walters said he initially formed the group last August with drummer Jack Butcher, a fellow student at County Upper School, Bury St Edmunds, and bassist Ben Flowers, who is studying music technology at West Suffolk College.
Having started out persuading friends to show their support at gigs, the three are now beginning to build their own fan-base through word of mouth, with regular faces turning up at shows.
And the group, whose influences include the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against The Machine, also came close to taking the title at last month's BurySOUND final, in the end coming second in the competition.
"Me and Jack had always wanted to be in a band, and we knew Ben played bass, so we started out going to the Amplitude project," he explained.
The Suffolk-based project gives young bands the chance to learn more about playing, writing and recording, as well as offering showcase nights at venues in Bury, Stowmarket, Debenham and Eye - and Ben said the group were indebted to tutor Jon Hart, who has encouraged them in their endeavours.
"Jon has really helped us. Without him, we would be nowhere - we didn't even think about setting up a MySpace page before we talked to him," he said.
"It's been going really well. We've done quite a few gigs with Amplitude, and now we're also trying to get some gigs on our own as we're getting a bit bigger.
"We're really trying to do it seriously, but it's quite hard as Jack and I are only 15, and a lot of venues need you to be 18 to play."
In the meantime, the band are hoping to record an EP for release next year, while they also have a handful of gigs lined up, including one at Pot Black, in Bury, on December 10, and a possible show at the Minden Rose, Bury, on December 16.
