Band Spotlight: Darren Michaelangelo Smith

A singer, songwriter and guitarist, who shot to fame last year, has taken on some new talent – in the form of a backing band.

Darren Michelangelo Smith, from Haverhill, started playing in bands when he was just 13-years-old, including Eight Lives Left.

But the highlight of his career so far was appearing on the Channel Four show in 2007 called T4 Musical with nine other talented artists.

The group was challenged to reinvent classic musicals and Darren, 20, gained himself the role of the rock and roll Prince Charming.

Since then, he has been spreading his gigs across the UK and has got together with The Kraze, comprising musicians from Haverhill, St Ives and Brighton.

Darren, who is known as DMS, said: "I have been pretty dedicated to music, I've given 110 per cent as that is all I do.

"The show was a turning point. I got lots of publicity from that and got some really good gigs."

Together, DMS and The Kraze are now finishing the videos for two singles and are planning to release the first one in July.

Members of The Kraze include drummer Chris Boot, trumpet player Steven Hughes and part-time bassist James Page.

DMS, who describes their music as a mix of indie, ska and soul, said they are also planning to release an EP around the same time.

In the meantime, the team is fitting in as many gigs as possible, including festivals in Letchworth and Hitchin.

They are headlining at the Junction, in Cambridge, on June 13, with special guests whose identity they are keeping secret until the night.
