Abbey gardens, Bury St Edmunds
There are probably few more well-known places in the heart of Bury St Edmunds than the beautiful Abbey Gardens.
Nestling inside the old Abbey Wall which runs towards St Edmundsbury Cathedral, this oasis of calm in the centre of the bustling town is always a sight to behold.
Situated on the site of a great Benedictine Abbey, the gardens draw thousands of visitors every year from far and wide, as well as those lucky enough to have them on their doorstep.
Entering through the imposing Abbey Gate from the town centre, the gardens open out in front of you.
The pristine formal flower beds nestling in well-kept lawns give way to a children's park, aviaries and tea rooms and a wander will also bring you to the ruins of the Abbey which once dominated this area of Bury.
There are quiet corners for some time out or why not feed the ducks which call the River Lark their home?
Superb at any time of year, the Abbey Gardens are a must on anyone's 'to do' list of this area.
Opening times: The Abbey Gardens are open Mon-Sat, 7.30am to half an hour before dusk, Sun and bank holidays 9am to half hour before dusk.
