CROWDS of people headed to Stonham Barns on Saturday for the East Anglia Potato Day.

The annual event, now in its 17th year, attracted more than 700 visitors who turned out to celebrate the popular potato.

Stonham Barns, in Stonham Aspal, hosted the event ,which was organised by Norfolk Organic Group, Suffolk Organic Gardeners and Ipswich Organic Gardeners Group.

Tetley Carter, one of the organisers, said: “We had more than 110 seed potato varieties, where else would you get that? In a garden centre you would only find three or four.”

The event aims to keep the national seed heritage library of potatoes going and introduces people to many potato varieties. The 2011 event also had chip tasting and potato cakes.

“It was a really good day and it shows how people like the different varieties,” said Tetley.
