A LOCAL brewery is creating a special ale to raise money for repairs to an ancient village church inspired by historic church wardens.

Earl Soham Brewery is creating the beer, using locally sourced ingredients, for St Mary the Virgin Church, in Mendlesham.

Mendlesham’s Best is a nod to the church wardens of the middle ages who sold their own beer to pay for the upkeep of the church.

Father Philip Gray, the vicar, said: “Our medieval ancestors knew how to enjoy themselves and our festival will be celebrated in the same spirit.”

Mendlesham’s Best will be served as part of the Mendlesham Summer Festival, being held in the village from August 12 to 14.

All the money raised will go towards restoring the 800-year-old church.
