Signs are not reliable
In M Vaughan-Williams' letter (Bury Free Press, January 11), he makes reference to the electronic displays indicating the availability of parking space in Bury. I have found these to be unreliable – on two occasions the park was shown as full but, in fact, was half empty.
This led me to wondering how they work.
In other towns I have visited that employ this type of system, the car parks have barriers which raise upon entry and therefore, presumably, record your entry and then raise again at the exit to, presumably, record your departure, thereby knowing how many cars come and go.
Our town does not have this – we purchase a ticket for a period of time. So how does the electronic device know when we leave? We may only stay five minutes, but how would the machine know?
I would be pleased if someone would be kind enough to explain the system for me.
