Once the capital of Roman Britain, Colchester's history is bloody and a lot of the action centred on the imposing castle.

Devastated by Boudica, invaded by Normans and beseiged during the English Civil War, the castle has many a tale to tell.

The many hands-on displays dotted around the castle mean children and adults alike can enjoying a more involved day out.

Kids can try on and feel the weight of Roman armour, attempt to tie up a Toga or test their knowledge of Roman numerals.

Venture into the dungeons to hear prisoners' tales and marvel at the magnificent Roman bronze statue of Mercury the winged Messenger or the Colchester Vase, one of the finest examples of Roman pottery ever discovered in this country.

The setting of the castle, in Castle Park, makes it ideal for a full day out.

Enjoy a picnic in the park while the kids let off some steam in the adventure playground or the mini golf.

Opening times: Colchester Castle is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm.

Admission: £5.20 for adults and £3.40 for children. Under fives get in free and a saver ticket for families is £13.90.
