Tributes for former mayor

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Mayor of Stowmarket and district councillor whose funeral service was held on Monday.

Bette Jones, 88, died peacefully at the Beeches Residential Home in Ixworth on July 25.

Mrs Jones served as Mayor of Stowmarket twice and served on both the town council and Mid Suffolk District Council, campaigning tirelessly for her community.

Current Mayor of Stowmarket Anne Whybrow said: “She was always an inspiration for people to become councillors and even when she was not a councillor she was always out there helping people.

“When we first met she said ‘you’re wearing my old clothes.’

“They say the mayoral chains weigh heavy because of who has worn them before you and that is certainly the case with Bette.

“The number of people at her funeral service is testament to what sort of person she was.

“From people of all ages and from all walks of life she commanded the greatest respect.”

Mrs Jones, who lived in Bury Street, Stowmarket, for more than 40 years was the wife of the late Eric, who had also served as Mayor.

Mrs Jones was mother to the late Ian, and leaves behind three step children, one step grandchild, a granddaughter and three great grandchildren.
