Suffolk gets more qualified paramedics

SUFFOLK will soon have more qualified ambulance paramedics to respond to emergency 999 calls.

This summer, 56 ambulance paramedics (SAPs) currently going through their training with the East of England Ambulance Service will become fully qualified and most – 17 – are based in Suffolk, compared with 12 in Essex, nine in Norfolk, nine in Cambridgeshire, seven in Hertfordshire and five in Bedfordshire.

“They have been working for the service on a limited basis since 2010 during their training but will become fully qualified and registered during the summer which will obviously help boost qualified paramedic numbers enormously,” said an ambulance spokeswoman.

The SAPs were taken on by the service in response to figures showing ambulance response times were failing to hit targets in some areas.

Since last autumn, 45 new emergency care assistants have also been recruited to the frontline, creating more double-crewed ambulances, although some were employed to fill existing vacancies.
