Simon abseils down The Shard

A BRAVE dad has taken a massive leap of faith by abseiling down Europe’s tallest building The Shard, in London.

Simon Allen, from Horringer was inspired to join the fund-raising team led by Prince Andrew in support of the Royal Marines, in which his son, Luke, serves.

He said the day was fantastic and organised with military precision, but the abseil proved somewhat daunting.

Take The Leap challenge was raising money for the Commando Spirit Appeal, which supports commandos in need.

Last year, Simon, 48, raised £25,000 by taking part in another challenge and has already raised a further £5,000 already and is hoping to increase that.

Simon, 48, was carrying a head camera for the BBC, which asked him to look up, down and to both sides and the looking down proved a ‘heart stopping’ moment.

Simon said: “ I managed to regain control but it was a surreal moment. There were some wonderful views up there but I was really pleased to be back on terra firma.”

Luke served in Afghanistan in 2010 but lost 14 of his colleagues in the conflict.

Simon said: “The Shard is a wonderful building and a masterpiece in architecture.

“All in all it was a very good day and the most impotant thing is more than a million was raised on the day.”
