SCORES of people travelled from across the country to marvel at the recently restored Bardwell Windmill as part of an open day.

During Sunday’S event, which marked National Mills Day, they could enjoy a wealth of activities including tours of the mill, wool spinning displays, a raffle and tombola.

Other highlights were bread-making, a steam engine and crafts for sale.

The historic structure’s sails and cap were destroyed following a storm in 1987 – just months after it was bought by Geoff and Enid Wheeler.

Mr Wheeler died in 1995 but his family and the Friends of Bardwell Windmill raised more than £100,000 to restore the features.

Tony Stokes, member of the friends group, said the open day was a success with an ‘excellent turn out’.

He added: “It was very busy with a steady stream of people, who travelled quite a way to see it.

“They were standing there in wonderment. The village are extremely pleased with it.”
