Karen Cannard is celebrating becoming a semi finalist in the 50,000 Waste Reduction Challenge Prize which recognises innovative ideas. Karem began her recycling initiative with her Rubbish Diet blog which has gathered great momentum.
Bury St Edmunds recycling campaigner Karen Cannard has had her Rubbish Diet shortlisted for a prestigious prize.
Karen set up her famous blog in 2008 as part of St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Zero Waste Week.
She is a semi finalist in the £50,000 Waste Reduction Challenge Prize run by Nesta, the UK’s innovation foundation which aims to identify new ideas which can influence communities to reduce waste.
If Karen is successful to the next stage she will receive £10,000 and advice on testing her project to roll out the rubbish diet nationwide to encourage communities to start slimming their bins.
Winners of the waste challenge, which is part of The Giving Challenges funded by the Cabinet Office, will receive £50,000 and be announced next September.
Karen said: “It’s a real honour and wonderful opportunity to be in the semi final. When I started my rubbish blog I never would have foreseen this happening.”
Also listed as semi finalists is the mattress aand sofa recycling scheme by Suffolk County Council and Newmarket charity Open Door.
