RAIN failed to dampen spirits at Lakenheath Carnival last weekend as people lined the streets to watch brightly coloured floats parade through the town.

Townspeople dressed up as characters from the Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as well as a horse jockey and even Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton to process alongside vintage cars and tractors.

Chairman of Lakenheath Carnival Committee, Tracy Whitehand, said: “It was a success, especially considering we had bouts of rain. When the sun came out it was really shining.

“We never have a theme because then people can use whatever they have, some people might have something that starts an idea and then we get a nice variety.”

The procession began at Woodlands, Brandon, at midday on Saturday, August 4, led by Joyce and Graham Cook who travelled up-front in a classic car in recognition of their years of community involvement.

Awards were handed out to those that took part in the parade including the best small and large floats as well as the best dressed bicycle.

The parade completed its journey at Lakenheath Pavilion where the new Jubilee Gates were opened for the first time.

Live entertainment including clowns and bands performed at the pavillion into the evening alongside stalls and games run by local clubs and organisations,

Tracy said that the committee are already planning how to make 2013’s carnival even better.
