Ideas wanted for keeping libraries mobile

MOBILE library users are being asked for ideas to reduce the cost of the service.
Suffolk County Council has started a six-week consultation on what users value in the service and asking for suggestions on how to save public money.
The county’s portfolio holder for libraries, Judy Terry, said: “There is no question of removing it altogether. I want to reassure people that these proposals will not leave anybody who currently uses mobile libraries without any level of local library provision.”
The county’s six mobile libraries call at 361 communities, serving 7,000 users at a cost of £600,000 a year. Each user visit to a mobile library costs the tax-payer £7.70 compared to £2.51 in built libraries.
Reducing mobile library visits from fortnightly to one a month and stopping visits to places with a library building would save £225,000 a year.
