AN EMOTIONAL crowd gathered at St Andrew’s Church, in Great Finborough, on Monday to bid farewell to a popular 15-year-old girl who died suddenly during a PE lesson last month.
Around 350 of Lily Webster’s family, friends, neighbours, school peers and teachers took part in the memorial service to celebrate her short but full life, passing through colourful displays of balloons on their approach to the church.
The Rev Chris Childs described Lily’s enjoyment of life, her many friends and her strong personality.
He said: “Lily was a young lady who knew her own mind. As young as two, she decided what to wear and remained fashion conscious throughout her life.”
Stowmarket High School closed early as a mark of respect and Lily’s fellow pupils prepared a song entitled So Proud, a recording of which was played, among readings of uplifting poems, including Afterglow, which reminded people to focus on happy memories of Lily, and upbeat songs including All Things Bright and Beautiful.
An inquest into the death of Lily, from Weavers Close, Stowmarket, was opened and adjourned on January 27.
Donations to her charities, The East of England Air Ambulance and The British Heart Foundation, can be sent to Meredith Greengrass Funeral Service, 9 Marriotts Walk, Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 1AF.
