Nostalgia for Laura.

These headlines appeared in the Bury Free Press on this week in years gone by.

10 years ago:

More than 50 Bury St Edmunds pupils walked out of lessons as part of an anti-war protest. Students from King Edward VI School, St Benedict’s Upper School and County Upper School met in the centre of town and peacefully demonstrated against the war on Iraq. The young campaigners, aged between 13 and 16, believed that the war was ‘morally wrong’. Many were given permission to take part by their parents, although their teachers had discouraged them from leaving school.

25 years ago:

The Museum of East Anglian Life had welcomed newcomer Blaze, an 18-year-old Dales-Clydesdale mare owned by the new museum curator Chris Page. Before landing her new role in Stowmarket, Blaze had worked at Mr Page’s former museum in Oxfordshire. It was hoped she would become a popular sight at various museum events and Mr Page hoped that she would also be used to offer museum visitors rides.

50 years ago:

A blaze had destroyed the workshops and paint store of furnishers Cole and Sons Ltd, in Stowmarket, which was a subsidiary of the Bury firm, Glasswells Ltd. The Coles and Sons manager Bernard Cole burned his right hand using an extinguisher close to the inferno. It was bandaged at the scene.
