From farmer to sheriff
A WELL-KNOWN local farmer has been installed as the High Sheriff of Suffolk.
Stephen Miles, from Great Ashfield, will take up the prestigious and ancient position as the county’s high sheriff for the next year.
He will be heavily involved with the law and maintenance of public order, and will also work to bring together people within the community. One of his key roles will be to support and encourage the work of voluntary and statutory bodies in Suffolk and recognise the contribution of individuals and organisations through the High Sheriff Awards scheme.
The office of high sheriff has existed in England for more than 1,000 years.
The high sheriff is an independent and non-political role, which focuses on supporting the judicial system and those who work within charity.
Mr Miles, pictured right, said: “It is a great privilege to have been asked to take on this role as it will give me the chance to see and understand what goes on behind the scenes in the county of Suffolk, meeting some hard- working individuals and groups along the way.”
He took an oath and was installed as part of a ceremony on Thursday.
