Friends take on 15 Welsh peaks
Anthony Patey, 40, from Coddenham and Peter Sims, 40, from Stowmarket, climbed 12 mountains in three days in Wales to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Two friends have scaled 12 mountain peaks in just three days to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Peter Sims, 40, from Stowmarket and Anthony Patey, 40, from Coddenham, set off on Wednesday March 13 to conquer the Welsh 15 - every mountain over 3,000ft in Wales.
The pair have both been touched by cancer - Peter’s mother-in-law Mary Leach died three years ago from pancreatic cancer and Anthony’s mother Ann died just last year.
The adventurous duo decided they wanted to do something special to raise much-needed funds for the cancer charity.
But after climbing four mountains on their first day and another seven the next, the pair were caught in horrific weather - facing temperatures of -18 degrees windchill.
But they carried on, digging their tent out of the deep snow and making their way up Snowdon Wale’s highest mountain.
Peter said: “We had planned to do all 15 and were expecting spring conditions but we were hit by terrible weather - but we managed 12.
“On the last night our tents filled with snow - we couldn’t stay another night as more snow was on the way.
“We did the challenge carrying 30bls of kit in our rucksacks. But it weighed much more on the last day because everything was soaked.
“The weather was awful - I have never seen horizontal snow before.
“On the third night I got very little sleep.
“You think people go to the Welsh mountains for peace and quiet - but the noise of the wind blowing and the snow hitting the outside of the tent was incredibly loud.”
Peter said he wqas itching to get back to Wales to conquer the remaining three mountains.
Peter and David have raised £245 so far for Cancer Research UK.
