After problems with the original site, Stanton’s Four Friends Memorial could be created within the grounds of the village pub.

More than £34,000 was raised for memorials after brothers Dan and Tom Hazelton and friends Adam Taylor and Peter ‘PJ’ Johnson lost their lives in an accident in January 2011.

A permanent memorial has been installed in Rickinghall, where Dan and Adam lived, but the memorial in Stanton, where Tom and PJ lived, has been delayed.

Marilyn Hazelton, Tom and Dan’s mother, said ‘problems with red tape’ had prevented use of the original site but that it seemed the landlords of Stanton’s Cock Inn pub, Nigel Wallace and Chris Roberts, had saved the day.

She said: “Nigel and Chris have offered part of the pub garden, which is wonderful of them. We’re all very grateful for their generous offer. There’s just a few final details that need to be ironed out.”

Mr Wallace said they planned to create the memorial in an area of the pub’s car park which would usually house three cars.

The space will be blocked paved, fenced off with gate access and will contain tables and chairs to allow visitors to reflect, which requires a minor variation in the pub’s licence, already submitted.

He said: “All the boys were part of the pub so I feel great that we could help.

“To us it’s just three car park spaces but, when it’s done, it’s going to mean something to the whole village.”
