Forty years for fund-raising pair
A PAIR of fund-raisers from Bury St Edmunds have retired after around 40 years collecting for a cancer organisation.
Michael Oliver, who lives on the Mildenhall Road estate, and Margaret Snell, of Northumberland Avenue, had worked selling a puzzles and competitions booklet on behalf of the Family Favourites Cancer League Health Care which, in turn, gives a minimum of 15 per cent money to Tenovus, a cancer charity.
But the organisation contacted Mr Oliver, who has been collecting on their behalf for 47 years, and Mrs Snell, who worked for nearly 40 years, to say it would no longer be sending out the booklets.
The two friends, who are both in their mid-70s, used to sell the books for £4 each, for which they would receive 50p commission.
“Years ago I used to sell about 500 of these books a month – I used to cover Mildenhall, Thetford and Brandon – now it was about 20. A lot of people were choosing to give their money to charity through the Lottery instead,” said Mr Oliver.
Mrs Snell, who is now battling lung cancer, was still delivering the booklets up until last month. She said she would miss the work.
“This is just devastating,” she said.
