First buses withdraw from Bury

BURY St Edmunds is to lose FirstGroup Bus Service from March, it was announced today.

The bus operator is to end its services in the town and close its bus depot from March 31.

Staff affected will be offered employment at First’s Ipswich depot.

The company has said its operations in Bury ‘have not been commercially viable for some considerable time’ and has blamed its latest decision, in part, on a reduction in the Bus Service Operators Grant.

i am one of 6,000 residents from the morton hall estate, the largest estate in bury. with only 1 bus serving the whole estate, which turned up nearly every hour. i asked one of the bus drivers if it was true about the axing of first buses and i was told they are closing on 31st january. your article is saying 31st march.. i want to know how on earth is my son who attends king edwards in town , is supposed to get there once first buses have stopped running. we are nearly 3 miles outside town and it is 2012 and not 1912, when our elders were forced to trek miles to school before public transport was invented. it seems bury is still stuck in the dark ages with appauling public travel services as the train service is just as bad.

on our way out today we were stuck behind 3 buses following each other out of the howard estate. first, mulleys then stephensons. its laughable that 3 buses are sent round the estates every 15 odd minutes, often following each other round and more often than not, empty at off peak times. we're always having it rammed down our throats about being "greener" so are these buses really needed so often when its not busy. its understandable in the mornings when people are getting to work and in the evening when they're getting home but throughout the day it seems like a big waste of money and a lot of pollution sending them round quite so often!!
