EAST Anglia’s Children’s Hospices has started a treasure hunt for any unwanted foreign coins, to help raise money for its hospices.

Each is desperatly trying to collect as many foreign coins as possible before a parliamentary deadline arrives to cease exchanging some currencies into Sterling.

The deadlines for specific currencies are, French franc February 17, Italian lira notes February 29, Finnish markka February 29, Scottish pound February 29 and Greek drachma March 1.

Foreign coins can be donated at Each’s charity shop in St John’s Street as well as any of its shops in Ipswich.

Nikki Brown, Suffolk fund-raiser for Each, said: “The amount of money that can be raised through simply handing in those loose coins at the bottom of the kitchen drawer is quite amazing. Since 2010, more than £2,500 has been raised through local people donating their unwanted foreign coins.”

To help with their coin drive Each has teamed up with Lockdales Auctioneers, of Upper Orwell Street, Ipswich.

Tracey Maugé, Lockdales Auctioneers, said: “For local people, handing in foreign coins is a quick and easy way to contribute to this amazing cause.”
