Couple join school’s Proud to be British Day
A HEADTEACHER from Fornham St Martin revived nationalist pride on Monday when his Fordham school hosted a Proud To Be British Day.
Kevin Bullock invited Bury St Edmunds couple Frank and Jean Rumball to the event after reading a letter in the Bury Free Press about their despair at not being able to find a Union Jack for their flagpole.
“The children were very responsive and it was a very happy atmosphere,” said Mr Rumball.
Mr Bullock said: “I think just because there’s volatile and nationalistic views, it shouldn’t stop people like me and my pupils expressing pride in our country – I want to win back the middle ground of national pride.”
The inspiration for the day came from talks the Fordham Primary School pupils had with elderly people at a nearby residential day centre on World War Two.
The school’s 227 pupils dressed in red, white and blue, opened an assembly singing the UK’s National Anthem and enjoyed a roast beef lunch.
It is to become an annual event.
