West Suffolk College Staff Association members Julia Moore and Vicky Smith present a cheque for 1,000 and a 22" television to Polly Kennedy and Tamasan Marshall from the Bury branch of the Stroke Association

HANDBAGS of all shapes and sizes have been helping to raise funds for a stroke charity.

West Suffolk College staff raided their wardrobes for as many unwanted handbags as possible to try to raise money for The Stroke Association by auctioning them online.

Polly Kennedy accepted a cheque for £1,000 plus a new flat screen TV on behalf of the association at a presentation on Monday at West Suffolk College.

The college staff raised £682 by selling raffle tickets at their annual Christmas lunch and a further £187.50 from their handbag auction, organised by staff member Vicky Smith. She said: “I did get on people’s nerves asking them to bring in different handbags every day, but we sold 35 handbags in two weeks so we’re all really pleased.”

The staff association added £130.50 to bring the donation up to £1,000 and also donated the Toshiba flat screen 22in TV.

George Burroughs, regional fund-raising manager for the East of England, said: “I am delighted that the college staff association has chosen to support our work during the year.I would like to thank everyone at the college for the magnificent £1,000 plus the very generous gift of a television.”

The Bury St Edmunds Stroke Association is the chosen charity being supported by the college staff association for the academic year 2011-12.
