HUNDREDS of green-fingered Bury St Edmunds residents have scooped awards for transforming their front gardens into floral havens.

More than 650 certificates were posted through letter boxes of homes and businesses across the town by members of Bury in Bloom to recognise their gardening achievements. Committee members scoured the town for the most attractive displays to recognise residents who would not normally enter a horticultural contest.

Julia Rackowe, campaign manager, said: “It’s a substitute for the more formal local competition we used to run which is time-consuming and quite expensive. It has been incredibly successful. We’re definitely hoping to make it a regular part of the Bury in Bloom year.”

Among those recognised was Richard Cox, 72, who revamped the frontage of his home, in Barons Road, Bury. He said: “It’s wonderful and the first time I’ve won anything for gardening.”
