CHRISTINE Bonner led her fourth charity walk in memory of her soldier son into Bury St Edmunds on Friday.

It was the fourth All The Fours walk Christine has done ‘4 the boys, 4 the families, 4 the fallen, 4 ever’, which have raised more than £100,000 for the Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Fund. She and fellow walkers started the 150 mile walk in Lincolnshire on August 12 and finished on Sunday in Southend.

They were met on Angel Hill by St Edmundsbury’s deputy mayor Terry Buckle, a former serviceman, then walked to the Territorial Army depot near the Anglian’s regimental headquarters at Gibraltar Barracks. This year’s walk’s total stood at £8,757 when they arrived and gained £1,137 in Bury.

Christine’s son, Cpl Darren Bonner, was killed in Afghanistan in 2007.

“Everybody has been so supportive,” she said. “It’s a recession, yet people still find the money to give to their troops.”

Jan Hawkins, from Dereham, also lost her son Alex in Afghanistan in 2007 and has walked with her. Current Royal Anglians supported the walk including Major Mick Abbs, who served with Darren and did much of the planning. Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/allthe4s
