A BURY St Edmunds police officer is to embark on an ambitious charity bike ride across America in memory of a six-year-old girl who died of cancer.

Paul Gant, who is a detective constable for Suffolk Police CID, will cycle 4,241.4 miles starting in Astoria, Oregon, and finishing in Yorktown, Virginia, over 46 days from Monday.

The 37-year-old wants to raise money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (Each), which cared for his close friend Lorna Prouse’s daughter Ella, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour aged two and died in 2006.

He said: “After Ella’s death, and having seen how Each helped to make things a little more bearable for Lorna and Ella’s little sister Charlotte, I always said to myself that if ever I did any charity work, it would be for Each. It would be nice to repay Each a little for what they did for people I care about.”

Anyone who sponsors Mr Gant £10 or more will be eligible to enter a contest to win a £100 voucher to spend at Revel Outdoors cycle shop.
