Willows Residential Home in Lawshall - Betty Simpson who has worked in the home since it opened in 1994 is retiring and Staff member Sarah Newton received an award for reaching the finals of the British care awards

Marking the end of an era and a prestigious achievement, a residential home has celebrated the careers of two dedicated care workers.

Senior care assistant Betty Simpson, 70, is retiring after 18 years working at Willows, in Lawshall.

Meanwhile, her colleague Sarah Newton has been named a regional finalist in the Great British Care Awards for care assistant of the year.

Mrs Simpson has worked at the home since it opened in April 1994 and officially steps down on the last day of the year.

At a party, she was presented with a number of gifts including a ruby cross and chain as a monetary donation from the directors.

Manager Margaret Holt said: “She’s incredible and so well loved by all the staff.

“She’s been a surrogate mum to most of us here and a mentor to all the staff. She’s going to be missed.

“She will come back and do some volunteer work.”

Mrs Newton was recognised for her dedication after managing a 35 hour working week as a single mum of seven children.

She has worked at the home since 2002.

Mrs Holt added: “She’s incredibly dedicated. She’s as dedicated to her job as she is to her family.

“She encourages them in everything they want to do. They’re a very close knit family.”
